Stretching Techniques for Better Flexibility & Strength

Stretching Techniques for Better Flexibility & Strength

Flexibility and strength are related parts of movement, but they are not the same thing. Flexibility concerns the movement available at a joint. Strength activities challenge the muscles. A stretch alone does not replace a strengthening program.

Begin at an appropriate level

General flexibility routines can include movements for the neck, trunk or calves. Your physical therapist can help you choose activities that fit your assessment and goals. If an injury, surgery or health condition affects you, ask a qualified professional which movements are suitable before trying a general routine.

The most useful exercise is one you understand and can perform as instructed.

Ask about both range and control

A conversation about exercise can cover how far you move and how you control that movement. Strengthening may use body weight or resistance, while flexibility activities focus on available movement. Your own starting point matters more than copying somebody else’s routine.

  • Ask your therapist to demonstrate the movement.
  • Clarify which exercises belong in your plan.
  • Check how to progress rather than adding more on your own.
