If you are new to physical therapy, the name may tell you less than the conversation behind it. A first visit is an opportunity to explain your symptoms, ask questions and discuss the movement or daily activities that matter to you.
What can a visit involve?
A physical therapist may ask about your medical history, symptoms and lifestyle, and assess factors such as movement, strength or balance. They can then discuss treatment options and the number of sessions that may suit your situation. Exercise, manual therapy and advice can all form part of care; the combination depends on your assessment.
You do not need perfect terminology to explain what you want help with.
Make space for questions
Before the appointment, think about what you want to understand. You might ask what the assessment involves, how to prepare for a home visit or who to contact if something is unclear afterward.
- What are we working toward?
- What will happen during a session?
- What information should I have ready?

Care in the clinic or at home
A clinic visit takes place in our Lancaster treatment space. An in-home visit lets you discuss movement in the surroundings you use every day. In either setting, ask how to prepare and share the goals that matter to you.
